Day to day life for special needs people is often filled with tremendous obstacles and frustrations. The ability to build self-confidence, self esteem, and achieve a desired level of independence is challenging and frequently limited.
Ordinary activities, such as outdoor recreation, sporting and social entertainment events or even trips to the dentist for people with developmental disabilities are often rare, extra-ordinary occurrences.
Over 500,000 Florida residents are estimated to have developmental disabilities such as: mental retardation, cerebral palsy, autism, spina bifida or Prader-Willi syndrome.
Additionally, there is limited funding available to provide outside recreational and dental care. Caregivers and therapists often struggle just to find adequate funding for basic care and treatment of this population group.
Through the philanthropy of Special Day Foundation, children and adults with special needs are exposed to dental services that improve oral healthcare and socialization opportunities through outdoor recreation that helps to increase self-esteem and enrich the quality of their day-to-day lives.
What is SDF?
Special Day Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit based in the Sarasota/Bradenton area of Florida, provides opportunities for children and adults with developmental disabilities to experience the physical, therapeutic and social value of nature-based recreational activities and specialized dental care.
SDF is uniquely situated among the region’s foundations because of its founders’ long time involvement with special needs people.
The Foundation took on the challenge of very limited resources available to special needs people in the sunshine state.
The Special Day Foundation began its mission in 2008.
Quality Dental Care… Made Available
Special Day Foundation has joined with the University of Florida College of Dentistry by providing funding for the programs that provide dental care to special needs patients. SDF recognizes the detrimental effects of poor or inconsistent dental care on the overall health and well-being of this often overlooked segment of the population.
Through the philanthropy of Special Day Foundation, children and adults with special needs can experience new and exhilarating adventures as well as sound and consistent dental care. These programs create self-esteem, promote good oral health, encourage independence and enrich the quality of their daily lives.

Fun Recreational Opportunities
Accompanied by family and/or caregivers and SDF volunteers, special needs children and adults are able to participate in boat tours of the natural inland and coastal waterways around us, adaptive fishing, and various social event experiences are possible as well. Most outings are conducted year-round. They are provided at no cost to the special needs community through gracious individual donations and SDF support. The Foundation, headquartered in Bradenton Beach, is dedicated to making these specific recreational pursuits more fun, more often, for people with physical and developmental disabilities. It’s an adventure that can be therapeutic, exhilarating and rewarding for participants, caregivers, family, and friends alike!
